Reflection
This semester in Professional Practice has given me a much clearer understanding of the business side of interior design. Before this class, I mainly focused on creativity and design concepts, but now I understand that being a designer also requires strong knowledge of contracts, fees, client communication, and ethical responsibility. Learning about different fee structures, such as hourly rates and fixed fees, helped me see how designers value their work and manage projects professionally.
One of the most important things I learned is how to communicate clearly with clients through documents like Letters of Agreement. This showed me how important it is to define the scope of work, responsibilities, and expectations to avoid misunderstandings. I also learned about different business formations and the risks and responsibilities that come with each, which helped me realize that I want to gain experience working for a firm before starting my own business.
Creating my ePortfolio was also a valuable experience because it allowed me to present my work in a more professional and organized way. I learned how to think about branding, layout, and how to visually communicate my design style. It helped me understand that presentation is just as important as the design itself.
Overall, this course has helped me grow not only as a designer but also as a future professional. I now feel more prepared to enter the industry with a better understanding of both design and business, and I am more confident in how I present myself and my work.
